Everything about the free Sankey diagram maker, and where SankeyCharts.app ends and QueryChart begins.
About SankeyCharts.app
What is SankeyCharts.app?
SankeyCharts.app is a free, no-signup Sankey diagram maker. You type each node, where it flows and how much, or paste a source, target, value list, and the Sankey diagram draws itself: bands sized by amount, columns laid out automatically.
Is SankeyCharts.app free?
Yes. Making Sankey diagrams is free with no time limit and no account required. Your work is saved automatically in your browser. Downloading needs a free QueryChart account.
Do I need to sign up to make a Sankey diagram?
No. The editor opens ready to use: no account, no email, no trial clock. You only create an account if you want to download, save to the cloud or share, which live on QueryChart.
Do I need to install anything or write code?
No. SankeyCharts.app runs in the browser on Mac, Windows, Linux and Chromebook. There is no download, no add-in, and no Python, JavaScript or special syntax.
Making Sankey diagrams
How do I make a Sankey diagram here?
Each row of the sheet is a node. Type its name, the node or nodes it flows to, and one amount per flow. The diagram redraws as you type. A new name in Flows to adds that node.
Can I paste data from Excel or Google Sheets?
Yes. Copy three columns (source, target, value) and paste them into the sheet. A header row is skipped, a unit in the value header becomes the chart's unit, and a pair listed twice is summed.
What units can I use?
One unit per chart: a currency such as € or $, or any word such as GWh, tonnes or visitors. Type it with a number ("€1500") and the whole chart takes it.
What if my flows don't balance?
The editor flags any node whose inflow and outflow differ, with the difference, and still draws the diagram so you can find the gap.
Can I colour nodes and title the columns?
Yes. The Group column gives related nodes a shared colour, and the Stage column puts nodes in a named column whose name titles it on the diagram.
Are there templates?
Yes. The template rail in the editor opens QueryChart's Sankey library: budgets, cash flow, energy, supply chains, marketing funnels and more, each with its own example data.
SankeyCharts.app and QueryChart
What's the difference between SankeyCharts.app and QueryChart?
SankeyCharts.app is the free maker: numbers in, Sankey out, saved in your browser. QueryChart is the platform it is built on: downloads, cloud save, sharing, comments, team workspaces and version history.
What happens to my diagram when I sign up?
It moves into your new QueryChart account with its unit, groups and stages intact, and you keep editing it there.
Where are the Sankey templates and guides?
On QueryChart: querychart.io/sankey has the template library, the how-to guides and the Excel and CSV walkthroughs. This site is the maker.
